Shake Up Your Routine
We all get into routines and habits, things we do on autopilot. It could be taking the same route, or the order in which we perform tasks. While these routines and set patterns make life easier, they also help to keep our brains rigid and inflexible.
Its good to shake things up some times, especially when we are feeling stuck in some aspect of our life.
Change up a few of your auto-pilot routines consistently for a week and observe what happens. Try to be aware of any resistance you feel. This could manifest as unease, discomfort or even annoyance. Watch what arises and be curious about it.
What are you feeling?
Where is that coming from?
Is it familiar?
Have you felt that in other situations?
When?
What is it trying to tell you?
Writing down your observations and thoughts may lead you to some surprising places.
Or maybe you didn’t really feel anything at all. That’s okay. The point of the exercise is to introduce some neural plasticity or flexibility that will help change the big things that do negatively impact us.
So, once you’ve showered with your eyes closed for a week, try a more significant change. Perhaps sign up for that class you always wanted to, replace a routine that causes distress with something that previously seemed impossible, or decide to give yourself a set time every week for self care and see how it feels to actually do it!
